The Tennis Classic- Just three months until our 34th Napa Valley Tennis Classic. Our tournament was voted the best NTRP tournament in all of Northern California for 2010. So we are looking forward to another great event. Now is the time to think about volunteering to help make it even better. Contact any board member or Bob Walsh at bobwalsh10@comcast.net if you are willing to help. If you are not able to help maybe you could donate a case or two of bottled water.

The weather- This week the sun is out, the birds are singing and the courts are drying so life is great. Lets all go play tennis.

The board meetings are back to the second Wednesday of each month. The meeting locations will rotate so if you wish to attend, please contact Bob Walsh bobwalsh10@comcast.net or 255-2794.

Our annual meeting and potluck was held in February and we had a great turnout with fun tennis and a fabulous BBQ. The members showed up in true form bringing wonderful dishes to share and an abundance of the official tennis beverage of choice in Napa Valley (vino)!

Many thanks to Round Robin Director maestro, Matt Forbes for dividing us up and making it all fun...and the gourmet BBQ team of Rick Hanover and Ben Caron.

Elections were held when the party got started. Board members elected to a three year term, Bruce Lamoreaux, Barbara Pahl, Fred Facchini and Lorraine Fazzolare. Board member elected to fill the one year was Samantha Santiago (John Cooney decided to pull out). Officers elected were Bob Walsh, president; Lorraine Fazzolare, vice president; Todd Santiago, secretary; Barbara Pahl, Secretary.

We are SO FORTUNATE to have such a dynamic Board of Directors. Many thanks to all of you!

Super Senior 65+ League- The super senior 65+ league starts next week (April 4-8). There are two 3.5 teams representing NVTA captained by Bob Walsh and Tove Robinson. All of their matches are to be played during the week, Monday through Friday. The men will play 14 matches travelling to Marin, Santa Rosa and Fairfield. The ladies will play ten matches also travelling to Marin and Santa Rosa.

Adult League- There are 8 teams at NVTA and their matches have just begun so the weekends will continue to be busy thru the month of June.

Dick Giusto Reports- Our NVTA senior men's 3.5 team pulled off big upsets in the playoffs. We just made the playoffs in the last position number four. We then had to play the first place team Vallejo at their scheduled time in Vallejo. We upset Vallejo with a 2 to 1 victory thanks to the play of Mark Stuart, Dan Hunt, Leonard Lamb, Alex Reynoso, Jim Rose and Ron Wilske. We then had to play the second place team Vacaille on there courts in Vacaville. After several rain delays we finally got to play Sunday and we did it again. We beat Vacaville 2-1 with the great play from Leonard Lamb, Alex Reynoso, Mark Stuart, Les Leister, Jim Rose and Ron Wilske. I have never been on a team that has come from the fourth spot in the playoffs all the way to the District Championships. We will play in Elk Grove on April 8, 9 and 10.

The NVTA ladies 4.0 Senior team, captained by Lorraine Fazzolare, will also be headed to districts up in Sacramento starting April 9th. Good luck to all!!
No member can be out at our courts for long without meeting Chuck Simonds! He is the guy who is always lending a hand wherever it is needed for any project or endlessly feeding balls to up and coming players. He even gets to play once in awhile!

Chuck also is responsible for getting our court calendar system online. He has decided to retire from this particular job and the NVTA board decided to take this opportunity to thank Chuck for all his efforts by awarding him a life membership. Thanks Chuck!!
Many thanks go to Matt Forbes and Todd Santiago for stepping in to take over the NVTA court scheduling. This is a very challenging job as you can imagine! In order to make the scheduling easier for everyone, please read on!

Matt and Todd have agreed to do the scheduling previously done so well by Chuck Simonds. All scheduling activities will be done using email.

Requests for new schedules, changes, rain make ups, etc. must be sent to: NVTA.courts@gmail.com.

CAPTAIN RESPONSIBILITIES! The home captain is responsible for setting up the courts for a match. This includes squeegeeing the courts, if needed, setting up score tenders, wiping off the table you are going to use for food, opening the bathrooms and making sure they have supplies and then when the match is over, putting away the score tenders, clearing the area of trash, removing all open food containers from the clubhouse and locking all doors and gates. Some of you wonder why we have to spell it out and the reason is that with so many teams from NVTA some of the home captains are forgetting that they are the responsible one.

Janet Gelow Reports-Some of our team took a break from the cold & rain the first week in March and headed to the desert. We had lovely 80o weather, saw great matches at the PNB Paribas Tennis Tournament, stayed and played in the city of La Quinta at PGA West. We saw so many new players coming up and mixing up the older established players, we enjoyed so much great tennis!! We spent some of our time at La Quinta resort watching the stadium warm up court, while getting a bite to eat and a cool drink. We had a great time being together, bonding, laughing and having good ol' fashionfun!! A great big thanks to Sets Guillen, our travel guide one more year, for putting up with all of us. Your the BEST!!

While we played tennis every morning, we are excited to get back to league play. Our NVTA~B-1~SNMWTL team is in third place on an average sliding scale, counting the never ending rain out rescheduling. Our team would also like to thank all the NVTA volunteer staff for their unending devotion to promoting tennis and keeping our courts and leagues running!! Your amazing!!
Bev Wilson Reports- I was fortunate to be in the Palm Springs area during the BNP Paribas Open at Indian Wells. Once again, it was a great experience and an opportunity to see the top players up close. Several NVTA members were spotted in the stands!

Pals Cheryl Sweeney, Pam Bellefuille and their friend Shelly had a great time watching the pros. After a wet spring like this one, rumor has it that there will be an even bigger migration from Napa heading south next year!

Also seen on the courts and hanging around La Quinta were Tom Boster and Steve and Carol Price.
The St. Helena Hospital Healthy Heart inaugural Tennis Tournament benefiting the Heart & Vascular Center will be held at Meadowood on Sunday, May 1, and Monday, May 2, with a Men's, Women's & Mixed Doubles Round Robin format. The $1,000 entry fee includes a dinner event at the Reserve on May 1, featuring guest speakers Ronnie Lott and Carmen Policy. Dinner only is $500/person. See the Quick Links Box, upper left corner of this newsletter to visit the website.

The NVTA Board would like to thank Tom Steinman, the owner/manager of Sportabout for all the help he provides the NVTA.

If you are the last to leave the courts, please make sure the gates are closed and locked. We have found them left open overnight several times recently as well as the clubhouse doors. Vandalism has been a big problem in the past and we have spent a great deal of money on secure fencing and motion lights. PLEASE help keep your courts in good condition by locking up! None of us want extra repair expenses, right?
  • Windows are to be locked with the exception of both bathrooms. Some of you have been closing but not locking the windows. If you don't know how to lock our windows please ask for instruction.
  • Window blinds are to be closed so people on the outside cannot see inside.
  • Do not leave partial containers of food in the kitchen.
  • Clean sink and counter and put away the napkins.
  • Because we do not have janitorial service you might consider dumping the trash from the bathrooms
  • Be sure to lock the gates of the patio and the courts.

The NVTA Court Reporter newsletter will be published monthly. Please submit articles and photos to Bev Wilson.

See you on the courts!
